Editor: I wish to expand on the articles written in the Aug. 5 paper concerning the new house for Dirrell Harper. One of the things not mentioned was that his current living quarters are dangerous. It is an old 1966 trailer that was built on to. Half of the wiring has quit working and the rest keeps blowing fuses. And in his condition, there would be no chance of escape in case of a fire. Our City Council is very concerned about money. I’m sure it would cost the Fire Department more money to put out the fire than what the permit fees would be … let alone the probable loss of life. They say they can’t set a precedent by starting to waive fees for people. But isn’t that what they are doing with the grant money? I’m sure that not everyone that applies will receive help from it. I am offended by the inane remark from Councilor Scott McKee that popularity enters into it. We have the right to expect the people on the City Council to be professionals. There is a reason, or should I say many reasons, that people of this town are willing to help Mr. Harper. It is simply a matter of giving back. Mr. Harper has done a lot for many people before he was struck with his disability. This is a wonderful community that we should all be proud of. They always pull together when someone is in need. It’s very sad that this does not extend to the City Council. Many thanks to Ron Moore and Mike and Glenda Melcher for seeing a need and getting people involved. It is truly amazing what they have accomplished.
