Cops seek suspect in Safeway hold-up
The Sweet Home Police Department is looking for a man who robbed Safeway on Wednesday evening, Jan. 6.
At approximately 8:45 p.m., a male subject approached a Safeway employee and showed a note indicating a robbery, said Police Chief Bob Burford. He displayed a handgun.
“The person went in and approached a clerk at the customer service center near the front of the store,” Burford said. The handgun was tucked into his waistband.
He never drew the weapon or pointed it at anyone, Burford said.
After employees complied and gave an undisclosed amount of cash to the robber, witnesses said the man left the store and may have gotten into a late 1980s or early 1990s Chevrolet pickup with black custom rims, Burford said. The vehicle was last seen driving west on Highway 20.
“At the time of the robbery, Safeway’s surveillance system was apparently malfunctioning,” Burford said. “However, the equipment is being examined by Safeway security staff to see if any images can be recovered.”
Police have released a composite sketch of the suspect and likeness similar to the vehicle used to escape.
Police are investigating the crime as a first-degree robbery, a class A felony.
