Money is still running tight for the annual Frontier Sportsman’s Holiday fireworks display, and its future may be in jeopardy.

“We’re probably going to have it,” said Greg Mahler, Sweet Home Volunteer Firefighters Association secretary-treasurer. The show costs about $7,500. The association has collected about $4,000 so far for the 2010 display.

Mahler anticipates that the association will be able to collect the remainder, he said.

The last few years, he has been sending out 300 to 350 letters out to businesses and individuals, he said. That provides somewhere around $2,000 to $2,500 for the fireworks.

The only fund-raising events the association has for the fireworks are an upcoming pancake breakfast, participation in the dam run and an August poker run organized by Sweet Home Choppers.

The pancake dinner may provide a couple thousand dollars, Mahler said. With the breakfast, combined with responses to the letters, the association should get close to its $7,500 goal.

The association used to host a steak cookout, but the event started losing money, Mahler said.

“This year is a concern,” Mahler said. “If we make our $7,500, it’ll pretty much deplete the fund.”

The past few years, the association has carried over money to the next year, but he doesn’t expect to carry over any cash from this year.

If the association fails to raise the $7,500, it will have to cut the show or scale it back, Mahler said. The bare minimum for a show is $4,500 to $5,000.

Mahler credited a generous donation from L&D Construction for helping fund the fireworks the past couple of years.
