A Sweet Home-area man is facing multiple charges following a single vehicle alcohol-involved injury traffic crash Friday afternoon on Highway 20 about two miles east of Sweet Home, according to Oregon State Police.

Police said Kevin Roy Hampton, 46, of Sweet Home was driving a 1981 Ford F250 pickup eastbound at approximately 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 28, on Highway 20 near milepost 34 when the truck failed to negotiate a left curve, crossed over the westbound lane and hit the guardrail.

The pickup destroyed about 50 feet of guardrail and came to rest on top of the railing, police said.

Hampton was transported by ambulance to Lebanon Community Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries. He is facing charges of DUII, second-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and possession of an open container of alcohol in a motor vehicle.

Witnesses reported an unidentified passenger was seen leaving the scene of foot, police said.

OSP troopers from the Albany Area Command office were assisted at the scene by Linn County Sheriff’s Office, Sweet Home Fire and Ambulance District and Oregon Department of Transportation. The highway was closed about 30 minutes.

OSP troopers were participating with law enforcement agencies around the country as part of Operation C.A.R.E. (Combined Accident Reduction Effort) during the Memorial Holiday weekend which has the highest percentage of alcohol-involved traffic fatalities of all the major holidays throughout the year in Oregon.
