Painting from the heart
She paints.
She’s blind.
Deborah Feigum will tell you that it isn’t amazing at all. She’s just using the same skills sighted people employ all the time to do things without looking.
She also admits that when she still had her sight, she would have thought it impossible.
After being blind for some eight years, Feigum, 53, decided a few months ago to take up painting again, something she had set aside at least 15 years before losing her sight.
“To me, it’s normal,” she said. “It just took me a while to evolve my own method.”
Feigum is completely blind, she said. Like most blind people, she senses light and is not in total darkness, the reason she wears sunglasses. She lost her sight to low-tension glaucoma almost eight years ago.
She has adapted and can find her way around her home, Sweet Home and the canvas.
Outside of Sweet Home, she said, she gets turned around.
“You learn to do things you can do without your sight anyway,” she said. “It’s taken me years to learn not to reach for my glasses.”
She still wants to open magazines or books by reflex, she said.
She started painting at around age 11 or 12.
Her husband, Steve, encouraged her to start painting again earlier this year.
“This was all his idea from the get go,” she said.
She started practicing in January and then began painting in earnest in April.
“What else can I bring back?” she asked. “I can’t draw any more. I had to do something for me. I’m enjoying myself. That’s what this is all about for me.”
She has completed about a dozen paintings, she said. She wouldn’t mind selling some of them to help pay for supplies.
“If they like it, it makes it better for me,” she said.
When she paints, Feigum forms a picture in her mind, like a photograph, normally a memory from her childhood home in Kentucky. Mountains in the background are part of most of her paintings now, but those aren’t drawn from her memories, just something she has been practicing.
She finds her way around the canvas by using tiny adhesive buttons that she places around the parameters of the canvas.
She finds a pair of buttons vertically and horizontally and then moves her fingers to the point where they intersect to find the location she desires. Her palettes are also marked with the same touch dots, two at 12 o’clock and one at 6 o’clock.
“I’ve got it organized for me,” she said. “And of course, you see I’ve got plastic everywhere because I’m a mess.”
The most difficult part of the process is shading the colors, Feigum said. She always has paint under her nails because she measures different colors by dollops she picks up with her nails.
“I just know what’s in my mind, what I’m hoping to put there,” Feigum said. “Everything on here is planned. To me, it’s all just practice and rote. It’s not amazing. It’s practice. I’ve learned there’s very little you can’t do (without sight).
“God’s allowed me to put my memories on canvas.”
When she is learning a feature, such as her mountains, she just keeps working at them, she said. She is practicing painting eagles now. She’ll start with an eagle perched in a tree, and she’ll probably have to scrape it a few times till she gets it right.
“I have to get the rhythm, the feel of it in my hand,” she said.
She cannot do everything alone. She needs help with some things, and she also needs a set of eyes to confirm what she thinks is going on.
“I do ask my husband for a lot of help,” Feigum said. “The poor man hasn’t seen a whole TV program for a couple of months.”
Getting his input was tricky at first, she said. “It took a long time for me to get Steve to be honest.”
But that’s what she needs, she said. “If you tell me the truth, I can try to improve on it.”
Steve also names the paintings.
The Feigums have been in Sweet Home for about 18 years. She has no children. He has two daughters.
