Store owner closes up shop – temporarily, he says – to go help with hurricane aftermath

GTS G6 Surplus and Survival closed its doors for business at 1119 Main St. Saturday, not because it is going out of business, but because owner James Goble and his security company, G6 Security, are headed for New York to help with recovery after Hurricane Sandy.

Goble held a “deployment sale” on Saturday, packed up the store and closed, but it will eventually reopen.

“We’re part of the Hurrican Sandy relief for FEMA (the Federal Emergency Management Agency),” Goble said. “We’re security for the FEMA camps and the FEMA people.”

Goble opened his family-run store in July 2011.

“It was just something I figured everybody would like,” Goble said. “It was just something to give back.”

One of the things he prides himself with is keeping prices low to keep merchandise affordable so local residents can afford nice gear.

Goble worked at the Halsey Paper Mill before opening his store. He has lived in Sweet Home for 34 years and intends to return following his deployment in New York, he said.

The deployment is a combined effort among G6 security of Sweet Home, OEE of Corvallis and Elite of Eugene.

The security firms are on a contract for a minimum of 45 days, Goble said. They may be in New York for up to five months.

He’s taking a total of eight in the long run, Goble said. Initially, he is taking Randy Holder and Logan Brown with him.

They’ll work seven days a week, 12 hours per day, he said.

“When I’m done, I’m going to return and reopen,” Goble said. “We have a loyal fan base.”
