Sweet Home’s girls finished second behind North Bend Saturday at the Lebanon Invitational, where the Huskies scored 81 points, well behind their perennial competitors at state, who finished with 125.

Behind them were three 5A Division teams: Bend (62), Lebanon (27) and South Albany (13).

The boys finished third with 55 points, behind North Bend (111) and Lebanon (86).

Depth was definitely an issue for Sweet Home, especially the boys, who were without one of their best sprinters, Stewart Curtis. The boys got their only individual wins from Rawlins Lupoli in the 200 Individual Medley and the 100 Breaststroke.

On the girls side, the Huskies were more dominant at the top. They won all three relays and got individual wins from Megan Hager in the 100 Butterfly, Sarah Hewitt in the 200 Freestyle, Mia Davis in the 500 Freestyle, and Lauren Yon in the 100 Backstroke.

The meet was the second in a row in which Sweet Home has gotten a taste of what the state swimming championships opposition will likely look like. Beating Newport’s boys and both North Bend squads will be crucial to anyone looking to win the team titles.

“North Bend’s boys and girls are two of the power teams when it comes to state,” Coach Doug Peargin said.

Sweet Home started strong, with a win by the girls in the 200 Medley Relay and a second-place finish by the boys, “which helped us get off to a good start,” Peargin said.

“All of our club swimmers swam really well, but we also had good swims out of the entire team.”

Specifically, he said, newcomers Brook Womack and Isabel Rodriguez stood out for the girls, while Dakota Seward and Cameron Taber PR’d in the 500 Freestyle.

Peargin said his swimmers were “worn out from all the work we’ve done over Christmas vacation,” which reduced the number of PR’s for the Huskies.

“This meet was a great way to end the Christmas break,” Peargin said. “We’ve been working super hard over the break and I knew the kids were tired from all the yards we were doing, but we still swam pretty well.

“The good news was that we did get a few PR’s and a lot of times were close to their best times.”

Sweet Home will be in action again at 4 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 11, in a home meet against Philomath and Sisters, both typically among the better teams in District 2.

“Sisters girls were fourth at state last year and will be another good test for us,” Peargin said.
