Austin Rice named baseball’s Most Valuable Player

The Huskies named Austin Rice their most valuable baseball player on May 28.

The team also gave Brandon Keenon and Justin Tow the Rookie of the Year award.

The Golden Glove award, based on fielding statistics, went to J.T. Weld. The Big Stick Award, based on batting, went to Brett Blachly.

Cole Ashcraft was Pitcher of the Year.

Ryan Krause receieved the Winfred Hackworth Sportsmanship Award, which is given to a 15-year-old.

Justin Tow was Most Improved.

Brett Blachly received the Hustle Award.

JV Player of the Year was Jake Long.

Rice was named as an alternate for the upcoming All-Star game in Roseburg.

The Huskies finished in the state playoffs, eliminated 6-5 by Estacada in a tight play-in round, after finishing third in the Sky-Em League behind Sisters, first, and Cottage Grove, second.

“We were just so excited,” said Coach Matt Matuszak. “It was just a great season. We met all our expectations. We made it back to playoffs. It could’ve gone either way. Sure it would’ve been nice to win, but unfortuantely, somebody had to lose.”

During the season, the younger players stepped up at times they didn’t anticipate, he said, and the seniors provided great leadership. It’s the best practicing team Matuszak has had so far too.

Receiving their first letters were Colyn Van Eck, Brandon Keenon, Justin Tow, D.J. Bidwell, Jake Long, Tyler Funk, Devin Stafford, Keanu Aiona.

Second-year lettermen were Blachly, Kevin Seiber and Ashcraft.

Weld earned his third letter, and Rice earned his fourth.Senior
