Golfers in top 10 at state after first day

After falling victim to a spirited comeback by Cottage Grove last week at the Sky-Em District golf tournament, Sweet Home’s golfers were ninth on the leader board Tuesday morning in the 4A state championships in Redmond.

The Huskies finished the first day of the state tournament with a team score of 352, one slot ahead of Cottage Grove, which was in 10th place at 256.

Michael Tolle led the Huskies on the first day with a score of 82, good to tie him at 22nd. Stephen Bishop was two shots back at 84, tied for 34th. Chris Melcher finished the first day at 91, with Bryce Daniels rounding out the top four with a 95 and Brenner Roberts finishing with 99.

Cottage Grove roared back on Tuesday, May 13, to overcome a 13-stroke lead and take the league title from the Huskies at the district tournament at Tokatee, on the McKenzie River, winning by five strokes.

“It was a lot of little things,” Coach Pat Davis said. “We just couldn’t get any bounces.”

Tolle finished second and Bishop was third behind Junction City’s Johnny Hunts, who shot 77.
