Sweet Home’s football players got a chance to show their stuff Friday at a jamboree with Santiam Christian, North Eugene and host Scio on the Loggers’ artificial-turf field.
“I was pleased with the effort and performance of our team,” said Head Coach Dustin Nichol after the Huskies scored six times in 36 plays, on four passes and two rushing touchdowns.
Defensively, Sweet Home gave up two scores, to North Eugene and to Scio.
Nichol said every varsity player got a chance to compete.
“Basically, the entire varsity got film time and got evaluated. It was a good night.”
When North Eugene scored, it was against a Sweet Home secondary that was all-reserves, he said.
Other than some “small details” such as pad level, sustaining blocks and squaring up better, he said the Huskies did well.
“Guys knew where they needed to go and were able to make plays. I’m excited about where we are in the season and optimistic about this coming Friday.”
Sweet Home will open its season at 7 p.m. Friday at Crook County in Prineville.
One of the reasons why Nichol said he decided to go to Scio was because the Loggers run a double wing offense similar to Junction City, so it was a chance to get ready for the Huskies’ visit there a month from now on Oct. 3.
“You don’t come across double-wing teams that often,” he said. “It’s an opportunity to practice.”
He noted that Scio has won back-to-back 3A championships and Santiam Christian was also a recent state champion.
“They’re a level below us, but we’re looking at state champions who could move up to our level and go to the playoffs easy enough. It’s not like we’re looking for easy teams to play against.”
