The New Era - All about Sweet Home since 1929

Letters to the Editor

July 20, 2005

On Saturday, July 9, I had the opportunity to organize the line-up of the annual Sportsmans? Holiday Parade. It was the second parade line-up I had done for our community. I would like to express my gratitude to all who helped me with the parade and to all the parade entrants. The attitude and spirit of all who participated was overwhelming.

I would first like to thank Debbie Olson and Ben Allen from the Sweet Home Singing Christmas Tree. These two people were instrumental in getting people and all the entries into the numerical order of the line up. Helping them was Sonya, the intern from the Chamber of Commerce. It was Sonya?s ?day off,? yet there she was working to help out as much as she could. All three of these hard-working people walked the parade staging area answering the questions they could and keeping things organized.

I would like to especially thank the members from the entry from Lebanon who represented the Linn County Storybook Land. One gentleman aided us greatly by keeping a fire lane open through the staging area. He was as instrumental at getting our parade onto the road as were all the parade team members. Many thanks to that float crew!!

I would also like to thank the members of the Sweet Home Rotary Club who served as parade judges. These gentlemen walked the parade staging area, finding the entries in each division so they could fairly hand out first-, second- and third-place winning ribbons in each division. They decided as a group which entry deserved the Sweepstakes Award trophy for best parade entry. Thank you gentlemen for putting up with a ?pushy? parade chairman.

Thanks go out to Bob Burford and his officers from the Sweet Home Police Department who worked overtime to keep the streets open and safe. Also, thank you to the city public works men for their assistance.

Thank you Carla Claasen, the director of the Chamber of Commerce, who let me organize the parade and who kept things flowing smoothly.

And last, thank you to the nearly 70 groups and individuals who were the parade.

Remember, everyone: Our next parade will be held Dec. 3. Come on back!

We would like to apologize for inadvertently leaving off our thank you note in the paper the following businesses who donated to our "block party" on June 18.

Our event was a great success due to the participation of businesses like them, and we appreciate their generosity: Western Trailers, Albany; White's Electronics, Sweet Home; Willamette Graystone, Corvallis; and Willamette Valley Baptist Association, Eugene.
