A DEPUTY holds the custom guitar stolen Friday from Rascal Flatts.

Linn County Sheriff’s deputies made a safe recovery of a $2,000 custom guitar stolen Friday night, Aug. 14, from the Rascal Flatts band during the Willamette Country Music Festival, Sheriff Bruce Riley said Monday.

The theft occurred backstage during Friday night’s concert at the festival, he said.

Riley said Sheriff’s deputies and detectives working at the festival received information regarding possible suspects shortly after the theft occurred Friday night.

Acting on the information, the suspects were identified as Kevin Chase Atkinson, 19, of Eugene, and a 17-year-old girl from Junction City, who had attended the concert on the night of the theft.

An LCSO detective met Atkinson in Eugene at approximately 6 p.m. on Sunday, and took possession of the guitar, noting the guitar appeared undamaged.

Both suspects were cooperative when interviewed by LCSO investigators, Riley said. Representatives from the Rascal Flatts band requested no criminal prosecution of the pair, if the unique, custom guitar was returned unharmed.

“Willamette Country Music Festival administration staff was instrumental in the successful resolution of this investigation,” Riley said.
