Huskies post personal bests at Junction City

April 5, 2016

Sweet Home had moments of greatness Saturday at the Junction City Invitational track and field meet.

For starters, the weather was beautiful for a meet that frequently takes place in rain and wind.

The Huskies and the other eight teams at the event took advantage, with some stellar marks.

“I think we’re moving in the right direction for sure,” Coach Allyson Bodenbach said. “We had lots of PR’s this week.”

Sweet Home’s girls placed third, behind Siuslaw (855.5 points) and Pleasant Hill (681.5), with 611.5 points, ahead of Junction City (605.5) and Elmira (417.5).

The boys were fourth, behind Junction City (863), Elmira (647) and La Pine (635), with 622 points.

Junior Trey Reed won the 400 for the boys and anchored both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays to second-place finishes, both behind Junction City. Their 4x400 run in 3:39.81 cut nearly eight seconds off their season-opening effort at Pleasant Hill two weeks before.

Garrison Whitfield was the boys’ other winner, taking first in the javelin with a throw of 156-4, a personal best, ahead of teammate Dillon Stuzman, who was second with a PR of his own – by more than a foot – 147-3.

“It was pretty impressive to see Garrison throw, still obviously do very well, said Bodenbach, who noted that Whitfield threw with a bad hand.

On the girls side, Bethany Gingerich duplicated Reed’s performance with a win in the 400 and anchored both relay teams, the 4x100 to third place after a series of poor handoffs and the 4x400 to second place, behind Siuslaw. She also ran to third place in the 200 in 27.73, fast enough to crack the top 10 of the early 4A state rankings.

There were other bright spots, particularly in the sprints.

Wes Parker set a personal best of 55.64 in the 400, then ran a leg in the 4x400 relay.

“Wes had a phenomenal day,” Bodenbach said. “He dropped three seconds in the 400. Nobody saw that coming.”

She also credited McKenzie Yoder, who clocked a four-second PR in the 400, running 70.48.

Bodenbach said Yoder, a junior new to high school track, has been working hard in practice, which earned her a trip to the Junction City meet.

“She runs a 1:10,” said Bodenbach, who decided to insert Yoder onto the 4x400 squad.

“Our sprinters did a great job. These were not small PR’s. It’s seconds.”

Another standout, she said, was freshman Noah Dinsfriend, who ran the 110 hurdles for the first time, then shortly thereafter ran the 800, also for the first time in high school. Then he turned around and ran the 300 hurdles.

“He ran back-to-back-to-back events,” Bodenbach said. “He did a phenomenal job. He’s a real go-getter, someone who really works hard in practice. That was not an easy combo by any means, especially as a freshman.”

Bright spots in the jumps were Justin Carpenter’s 16-inch PR in the long jump (20-1), good for second place; Caylie Trewin’s 4-8 clearance in the high jump and three near-misses at 4-10, and TJ Baham’s second place in the pole vault with a clearance of 11-6, two feet over his effort at Pleasant Hill.

Sweet Home will be back in action, on the road, Thursday, April 7, at Elmira, where the Huskies will get their first look at Sisters. Meet time is 4 p.m. They will host their first home meet the following Tuesday, April 12, against Cottage Grove and Sisters.
