Alumni sought for High Q Award

May 10, 2016

Sweet Home Alumni Foundation has assumed the coordination of the prestigious Sweet Home High School High Q Award of Merit.

Foundation directors are seeking nominations of deserving individuals for the 2017 school year.

The High-Q Award is not necessarily given annually, and is presented to a graduate of SHHS who has made exceptional contributions or achieved notable success, beyond high school, in areas of academics, leadership, vocation, and sometimes, athletics. Nominees must have been recognized on a state wide and/or national or international level.

Sweet Home alumni receiving this award in the past have included Melcher Logging (Mike, Scott, Robbie and Jim Cota) for their national recognition as tree farmers, Jerry Farnsworth for his military and business success, Robert Waibel for his International logging competition representation, and Jim Stock for his business recognition.

High-Q was a popular televised game show centered on quick recall, in which high school teams would compete answering timed questions about topics they studied in school.

The High Q Award was established by the SHHS State Championship High-Q Teams of 1972-73. Coached by SHHS instructor George Wenzel, the championship team consisted of Eric Duncan, Richard Black, Jim Cook and Tom Palkkie.

Please send nominations, including name and contact information of nominee, name and contact information of yourself, and a detailed description as to why your nominee is deserving of the award. Foundation representatives will follow up with details. Please send to SHAF, PO Box 73, Sweet Home, OR 97386. Nominations will be accepted year-round, and the award will be given out at a future SHHS Commencement Ceremony.
