Edward A. Slinger, 84, of Sweet Home died July 24, 2016.

He was born Jan. 12, 1932 in Portland to Choa and Violet (Roley) Slinger.

He moved to California at an early age and lived in Redding.

Mr. Slinger served in the United States Navy from March 1951 until he was honorably discharged in February 1955. His duty was mostly overseas. He received the Korean Service Medal 1 Star, United Nations Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal.

In 1970 he moved to Sweet Home, where he worked in the sawmills including Bauman Mill of Willamette Industries.

Mr. Slinger was the oldest standing member of the Eagles FOE in Albany, a member of the VFW in Sweet Home and the American Legion Post 51 in Lebanon.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Slinger of Sweet Home; son James Slinger and daughter Joey Noonchester, both of Newport; step-children Frank Slinger of Lebanon, David Banta of Platte City, Mo., and Therese Misner of Crabtree; half brother Joe Spearfish of South Dakota; eight grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Mr. Slinger was preceded in death by two brothers, Tom Burns in 2005 and Richard Slinger in 2011.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
