After falling to Cottage Grove, spikers revive against Elmira

ALLY TOW, left, slams the ball past Elmira defenders for one of her 14 kills.

Sweet Home’s volleyball team isn’t down for the count, but this week’s road matches at Junction City and Elmira will be key to the Huskies’ hopes of getting to the postseason.

After losing 3-0 to Cottage Grove Tuesday, Sept. 27, Sweet Home bounced back Thursday, Sept. 29, with a 3-0 win over Elmira.

Then, on Saturday, in their third of four tournaments this season, at Junction City, the Huskies played well, according to Coach Mary Hutchins.

They won their pool in the morning, then beat Molalla 25-10, 25-12 before falling to South Umpqua 25-20, 25-20.

“We did play well. We had a few costly errors against Molalla,” Hutchins said.

Earlier in the week, after losing to Cottage Grove 25-15, 25-19, 25-14, the Huskies bounced back against Elmira.

“We talked about turning it around, regrouping,” Hutchins said.

Elmira wasn’t a pushover – “they have four kids that are pretty good,” but Sweet Home came out firing, with a varied attack shared by a number of players, winning 25-10 25-16, 25-16.

Ally Tow led the Huskies with 14 kills and Madisen Barringer added nine more.

“We’re excited,” Hutchins said. “We hope to finish strong.”

The Huskies were 2-3 in league, 8-6 overall, in fourth behind Cottage Grove (3-2), Sutherlin (4-1) and Sisters (5-0), and one game ahead of Junction City (1-4) going into Tuesday’s road match at Elmira and a visit to Junction City on Thursday. They will travel to Sisters Tuesday, Oct. 11, and host Sutherlin at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 13.

Hutchins said that the fact that Sweet Home is lurking in fourth place might play to the Huskies’ advantage, but they have to deliver.

“It’s kind of a long shot,” she said. “It would be nice to surprise somebody and sneak in the back door.”

KATE HAWKEN, left, and Kylie Armstrong put up the block against a shot by Elmira’s Ashton Webber.
