Shirley Bird

March 27, 1941-Dec 15, 2016

Shirley H. Bird (aka Mama Bird, Grandma Buzzz, and S.H.), 75, of Sweet Home ended a brief but challenging battle with cancer with her daughter by her side.

She was born Shirley Brenno on March 27, 1941 in Noonan, N.D. She attended Flaxton (N.D.) High School, where she met and married Stanley (Stan) Bird on Dec. 27, 1957. Mrs. Bird followed her husband to Fort Bragg, N.D., where son Jerry was born in 1958. Daughter Lisa was born in Mohall, N.D. in 1961.

The family lived in Sherwood, New Salem and Grand Forks, N.D., before moving to Roseburg and, later, Sutherlin.

Mrs. Bird had many different jobs, but loved working for SO Cable TV of Roseburg, where she made many friends. Most of her joy came from being a homemaker and raising her children. She was very witty and silly. She always had a soft spot in her heart for the underdog, and loved cats, especially those who needed a home.

As an adult, Mrs. Bird earned an associate of arts degree at Umpqua Community College in Roseburg. After the Birds were divorced, she met Gary Vaughn and they spent over 30 years together.

Mrs. Bird was artistically gifted with a gift for creative writing. She was noted for her beautiful voice; she also played guitar, dabbled with the banjo, painted, and could make the most delicious meals, even if she “took her own sweet time” with everybody else waiting.

She is survived by son Jerry Bird, of Sacramento, Calif .; daughter Lisa and son-in-law Tom Daniels and a granddaughter, all of Portland. She is also survived by her partner, Gary Vaughn of Sweet Home; sister Janice Arneson of Forest Lake, Minn .; brother Mylan McLean of St. Paul, Minn .; brother Lavern McLean of Lincoln, N.D .; and ex-husband Stan Bird of Sutherlin.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 22, at Huston-Jost Funeral Home in Lebanon. Private burial will be at the Gilliland Ceme-tery in Sweet Home.
