December 20, 2016

JUSTIN CARPENTER slashes to the basket during the Huskies’ win over Jefferson Dec. 13. Carpenter was the Huskies’ leading scorer, with 29 points against the Lions.

Justin Carpenter led the way for Sweet Home, scoring 29 points in a 70-59 win over Jefferson Dec. 13 at home in boys basketball.

“Just like we expected, they played a fast game,” said Coach Drew Emmert of the 3A-Division Lions.

The game stayed tight for the first half, after Jefferson took an early lead and Sweet Home battled back to tie things up, then edge ahead to take a 28-25 lead into the locker room.

The Huskies moved ahead in the third quarter and never looked back.

“Their guards were fast,” Emmert said. “It took us about that long to catch up with them.”

The Lions’ Abdi Ibrahim, a sophomore, and Ahmed Ibrahim, a freshman, are among the top cross-country runners in the 3A Division.Ahmed, a freshman, placed third at state behind another brother, junior Hassan, who was second overall.

In the first half, the Huskies had a hard time getting in front of the Jefferson guards, he said. They started getting ahead of them and cutting off their drives, forcing them into their offense and slowing them down. The Huskies started pulling away as they settled into their offense and stopped turning the ball over and giving up easy layups.

Jake Swanson battles for a rebound with Jefferson’s Jayden Ericksen in a battle of 6-3 sophomores.

Carpenter was one of four Huskies in double figures – Dan Virtue scored 11, Keegan Holly and Jake Swanson both added 10.

The Huskies were scheduled to host Siuslaw Monday and South Umpqua Tuesday at 4 p.m. They play in a tournament from Dec. 28 to Dec. 30 at Stayton. They will face La Grande first at 4:30 p.m. on Dec. 28.
