Husky boys fall to Siuslaw, S. Umpqua

December 27, 2016

KEANU AIONA launches skyward for a layup against South Umpqua.

Sweet Home lost 49-46 to Siuslaw and 65-57 to South Umpqua at home last week in boys basketball.

Against Siuslaw on Dec. 19, “we played hard all game,” said Coach Drew Emmert. Siuslaw kept the Huskies out of the paint with a 2-3 zone that included 6-7 Trent Reavis, the entire game, and the Huskies didn’t shoot well in a tight game in which the Vikings led 10-9 after a quarter and tied Sweet Home 26-26 at halftime.

Siuslaw edged ahead of the Huskies, 35-34, by the end of the third quarter. Trailing by just a point at the end of the game, the Huskies turned the ball over out of bounds, allowing Siuslaw to score one more time and stretch its lead to three.

Daniel Virtue played well, Emmert said, leading scoring with 15 points.

“We battled really well,” Emmert said. “We attacked their zone pretty good. We just didn’t shoot very well.”

Against South Umpqua Dec. 20, the teams were tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter. South Umpqua broke away in the second quarter to lead 35-23 at halftime.

“They got up by as much as 20 in that game,” Emmert said. “We played tired from the day before. We didn’t shoot good or play good defense. I don’t think we played near as hard in that game as we did the day before.”

South Umpqua led by 49-35 at the end of the third before winning the game by eight.

Sweet Home switched to a 1-3-1 trap, stole the ball and started coming back against South Umpqua, Emmert said.

Justin Carpenter led the team with 13 points, while Keanu Aiona added 11 and Colton Smith 10.

The Huskies travel to Stayton for a tournament Wednesday through Friday.

They open against La Grande at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. La Grande has had no losses so far this year, playing teams on the east side of the state,

Emmert is uncertain how Sweet Home will match up with the Tigers.
