Wayne Howard Johnston, 69, of Sweet Home died Dec. 20, 2016.

He was born Jan. 9, 1947 in Boise, Idaho to Wilber Earl and Mayme Louise (Verville) Johnston.

Mr. Johnston served in the United States Army and was honorably discharged in April of 1967.

He moved to Sweet Home in 1963 and lived on River Road. He lived in various places in Sweet Home but his home was on Wiley Creek (Little Wiley), where he lived with his wife and children.

Mr. Johnston enjoyed cutting firewood, playing guitar, hunting and fishing with his grandchildren. He loved taking his wife to dinner and just being with family.

He worked in Alaska in his younger years and for Bud Haley. He owned his own drilling and blasting company before retiring. He colleagues affectionately called him “Barney.”

Mr. Johnston is survived by his wife, Dorothy May Johnston; children Rebecca Kay and son-in-law JonPaule A. Williams Sr., Paula Melbye, and Glen Johnston; two brothers; three sisters; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Celebration of Life will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at Sweet Home Mennonite Church. A private family burial will be held at Roseburg National Cemetery.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
