Huskies win Linn County team championship, three individual wrestling titles

January 10, 2017

Three Sweet Home wrestlers won individual titles as the Huskies rolled to the team championship in the Papé Linn County Championships Friday, Jan. 6, at South Albany High School.

Sweet Home, led by first-place finishers Robbie Yunke at 126 pounds, Kobe Olson at 132 and Jake Porter at 152, scored 235.5 points, well ahead of the host Rebels (202) and Lebanon (199).

Under tournament rules, coaches could enter two wrestlers per weight class but only one could be designated as the scorer.

“We entered 26 wrestlers and 22 placed,” Coach Steve Thorpe said, noting that the Huskies’ depth forced some wrestlers to move up a weight. “Where you have that depth, that’s what you have to do to put a line-up together.”

Those place-winners included two girls, Gracie Olson and Marissa Kurtz, who placed fourth at 106 and fifth at 11e respectively. It was Olson’s first time wrestling in a boys tournament, though Kurtz has grown up in club wrestling and has experience against boys.

“Those girls are at a spot where they need to wrestle better competition,” Thorpe said. “That’s one way to do it.”

The freshmen in the line-up came through big for the Huskies, Connor Ford placing third at 106, Jackson Royer second at 113, Travis Thorpe third at 132 and Nich James second at 170.

Royer lost 4-0 in the final to No. 1-ranked 3A returning state placewinner Chance Hendrickson of Harrisburg and Thorpe lost to Grant Laiblin, also of a state placewinner last year for Harrisburg.

Kobe Olson “dominated” the 132-pound bracket and Porter continued to be a major force for the Huskies, Steve Thorpe said.

“Jake Porter is probably scoring more points in matches than I’ve ever seen. He’s beating a lot of people right now – and soundly. He’s taking people down, turning good wrestlers.”

Junior Justin Kurtz also had a good tournament, placing second at 138 pounds – his first outing at that weight.

“I’m pretty impressed with those guys right now,” Thorpe said of his team. “They’re picking the right time to wrestle well, in the middle of the season.”

He said he thinks the Huskies have been able to avoid the distractions caused by weather-related cancellations, including a scheduled dual at Elmira on Jan. 5 that was postponed.

“What our guys have done is respond nicely,” he said. “You make adjustments. You focus on the stuff you can control, not on stuff you can’t.”

Sweet Home is scheduled to wrestle, weather permitting, at home Wednesday, Jan. 11, in double-header dual against Philomath and Junction City. Matches start at 5 p.m. and if the Huskies win both, Thorpe will tie legendary Coach Norm Davis’ school record of 504 dual meet wins.

Friday and Saturday, Jan. 13-14, Sweet Home will compete in the Oregon Wrestling Classic, which will feature 94 high school teams, including all the ranked teams in the 4A division – Sweet Home is currently fifth, behind No. 1 Crook County, Henley, Marshfield and North Marion. Wrestling starts Friday at 8 a.m. at the Deschutes County Fair & Expo Center in Redmond.
