Sweet Home’s wrestlers were seeded third going into last weekend’s Oregon Wrestling Classic tournament, the de facto dual meet state championship for the state.

They won, beating powerhouses Crook County 43-30 and Marshfield 41-30 on Saturday, Jan. 14, the second day of the tournament, which was rendered a bit topsy-turvy because of team no-shows due to weather.

On Friday, Jan. 13, organizers combined the 6A, 5A and 4A teams into exhibition pools. Sweet Home lost 40-36 to 5A power Hermiston, and beat 4A Phoenix 76-6, 5A Mountain View 48-30 and 6A McMinnville 72-12.

“We wrestled 14 hours on Friday,” Coach Steve Thorpe said. “We would wrestle a match and then we didn’t know when we would wrestle again. Everything was kind of a mess because a lot of kids couldn’t come over.”

His team, though, stayed focused, he said.

“They did what they had to do. We didn’t go in there just wanting to get matches and hoping for good experience. That isn’t why we train the way we train and do the things we do. We went in there to win matches and get hardware.”

On Saturday, organizers seeded the 4A teams and the Huskies led off with a 54-21 win over La Grande, then beat No. 2 seed Marshfield before downing No. 1 Crook County, coached by former Sweet Home assistant Jake Huffman and four-time defending state team champion, in the finals.

“They’re one of the best programs in the state,” Thorpe said. “They have a lot of integrity. Marshfield does it right also. They’re all well-coached.”

Sweet Home’s wrestlers, though, stepped it up, he said. Nearly all were wrestling down a weight this weekend, which gave them some added pop on the mat.

“I told the guys before we went into the finals, ‘For you guys, this is unfamiliar territory,’” Thorpe said. “Our last time in the finals was 2013.”

They did.

Freshman Jackson Royer lost a 7-2 decision to the Cowboys’ Hunter Mode, one of the top wrestlers in the state at 106 pounds, but the next seven wrestlers combined for six falls and six falls and a major decision to ice the win for the Huskies. They didn’t even quit then, Thorpe said.

“Bryson (Denver) didn’t get pinned (in a 5-1 decision to Jaxson Rhoden at 170) and Bryce Coulter beat his guy (8-4)” to keep the points dial rolling up for Sweet Home.

“We got on a roll,” Thorpe said. “They were a unit. They were a team. It’s a neat accomplishment, something that we set a goal to do.”

Jake Porter went undefeated in the tournament, pinning five opponents and major-decisioning Marshfield’s William Jantzer, one of the state’s top middle-weight wrestlers, 12-4.

“That was a huge win,” Thorpe said of the Jantzer match. “I would say Jake Porter, right now, is wrestling as good as I’ve ever seen him wrestle.

“Coulter had big wins at 195 and 182 pounds. He’s wrestling as good as I’ve ever seen him.”

Other quality wins were Royer’s pin of Marshfield’s Kody Koumentis, the No. 3-ranked wrestler at 106 pounds going into last weekend; Ricky Yunke’s 9-1 major decision over Crook County’s Tyler Fioravanti at 138 pounds; Travis Thorpe’s pin of No. 2-ranked Cole Morgan of Crook County, who was third in state last year; and Kobe Olson’s pin of No. 1-ranked (at 120 pounds) Pacer Quire of Crook County in a 132-pound bout.

I was very proud of them,” Steve Thorpe said.

In girls wrestling Saturday night, Marissa Kurtz won the 113-pound division; Gracie Olson was third at 106, with Lexi Schilling fourth; and Katen Edwards was seventh at 126.

On Wednesday, Jan. 11, the Huskies scored easy dual-meet victories over Junction City (63-15) and Philomath (72-6), the latter taking Steve Thorpe to 504 dual meet victories to tie the legendary Norm Davis’ school record.

“That night was very special, to be able to do that at home,” Thorpe said. “We never planned it that way, but the weather conditions forced cancellations and that night I got to tie Norm. For that time I got to sit beside Norm.”

A large crowd turned out for the event, and Thorpe said he appreciated being able to share the experience with them as well as with his coaching staff, whom he credited with the success Sweet Home has had.

“I want to say thank you to all the people involved in the program,” he said. “I can’t list all of them without missing some, but the coaching staff is just part of it. I’m grateful to be able to be part of it. I hope we honored Norm and I think we did.

“It was a very special night, but now I’m not counting. If you look at your record and start worrying about that, you lose focus on what you’re trying to do.”

With the regional tournament on Feb. 10-11, Sweet Home is heading to the Resers Tournament of Champions this Saturday, Jan. 21. The Huskies wrestled a dual at Sisters Tuesday, Jan. 17.

“Our No. 1 priority is the regional tournament,” Thorpe said. “We have Resers this weekend, then we’ll finish up our league duals and just turn our focus to getting ready for regionals.”
