James McCool

James Kenneth McCool, 63, died suddenly on Jan. 28, 2017 at his residence in Sweet Home.

He was born July 27, 1953 in Coos Bay, the son of William and Doris McCool.

His father was in the Navy and the family moved frequently during his youth, living in England, Guam, Florida, Illinois and Southern California.

Mr. McCool graduated from Port Hueneme High School in 1971, where he was the student body president his senior year and was a member of the football team that was the first in decades to beat league rival Santa Barbara High on its home field – a story he was particularly fond of recounting.

He was also a track athlete, with a collection of medals that he was very proud of.

Mr. McCool attended the University of California at Santa Barbara on an academic scholarship, but dropped out to pursue his real love: surfing.

Living on the southern Central Coast in California, he was involved in the music scene and often told stories about his interactions with top music stars who hung out in the Santa Barbara and Ventura areas and visited a ranch he lived on in the area.

Mr. McCool worked for years in the oil fields in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska.

He was also a carpenter and apartment manager, and worked in real estate. In recent years he was well known as a local handyman.

He was proud of the fact that he conquered alcoholism during the last decade of his life.

He is survived by a son, Gregg Ramirez of Ventura, Calif.; brother Dan of Richland, Wash.; grandchildren Jake, Kyle and Lindsey Ramirez of Ventura, Calif.; nieces Claire Maloney and Kelsey McCool of Kennewick, Wash.; cousin Jenny Doyle of Albany; and many acquaintances.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A reception in Mr. McCool’s memory will be held from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 10, at the Evangelical Church Fellowship Hall, 1347 Long St. Parking is available off Kalmia Street.
