Husky boys fall to CG, JC in hoops

February 14, 2017

Cottage Grove put together a strong second-quarter run to close the deal in a 77-51 win Friday at Sweet Home in boys varsity basketball.

The Huskies lost a closer game to Junction City 50-43 on the road Feb. 7.

Against Cottage Grove, the Huskies put together three quick buckets to take a 6-0 lead, but Cottage Grove shooters warmed up and hit a pair of threes to tie the game. Cottage Grove led 18-14 after the first quarter.

The Lions outscored the Huskies 20-7 in the second quarter to lead 38-21 at halftime. They led 53-34 at the end of the third quarter.

“They just shot the ball so well,” Coach Drew Emmert said. In a zone defense, the Lions shot too well. When Sweet Home moved out of the zone, Cottage Grove got around them.

Overall, the Huskies shot reasonably well and not as poorly that night as they did earlier in the week. Sweet Home shot 57.1 percent inside the three-point line but went 2 for 15 from outside the line. Cottage Grove shot 47.4 percent overall and went 8-19 from the three-point line.

Daniel Virtue led Sweet Home with 14 points, while Keanu Aiona and Hayden Nichol each added eight.

At Junction City, the Huskies dominated the game, but they weren’t able to cash in at the hoop.

The Huskies pulled down 13 offensive rebounds, while Junction City had just two. The Tigers turned the ball over 21 times, while the Huskies had just nine turnovers.

“We just couldn’t make shots from the field,” Emmert said. “That’s been our issue.”

It’s the same thing that happened against Sisters the week before, he said.

The Huskies shot 50 percent from the foul line, and they shot just 25.9 percent overall from the field.

“It’s frustrating when you do everything you want to do,” Emmert said, but cannot hit the shots.

The Huskies led the game 11-10 after the first quarter and trailed 25-22 at halftime. Junction City stretched its lead to 36-32 in the third quarter.

Emmert said Nichol stepped up both games during the week, and he led scoring in this game with nine points.

The Huskies were scheduled to host Elmira in their final home game Tuesday and they travel to Sutherlin Friday in the final game of the season.
