SH scores seven TDs in jamboree

August 29, 2017

It was only a scrimmage jamboree, but Coach Dustin Nichol said he was encouraged by what he saw from his football team Friday, Aug. 25, at Scio.

Sweet Home scored seven times, though one touchdown was called back on a procedure penalty, in 36 offensive plays against Valley Catholic and Scio, two teams that play distinctly different styles of football.

“They made some mistakes, but they put themselves in position to make plays,” Nichol said of the Huskies.

Sweet Home scored four times against Valley Catholic and three against Scio.

Nichol noted that quarterback Colton Smith distributed the ball all over the field and was making good reads all night.

“Those seven scores came from five or six different people. Hayden McDonald and Austin James did a good job running the ball. The receivers were catching and carrying. (Reciever) Keegan Holly had two touchdowns.”

Defense-wise, the Loggers, who play “smash-mouth” football, scored three times on Sweet Home.

“We broke even, if you’re keeping score,” Nichol said. “We were really starting to stick it out as we went along. I was really happy with the way the kids performed. I’m excited about the opportunities. We were more prepared, for sure, than we were last year.”

Sweet Home hosts Hidden Valley at 7 p.m. Friday night, Sept. 1.
