Letter: New gun law has many weaknesses

Oregon Senate Bill 719 calls for the forced confiscation of property – guns – by the police with no due process, no accusation or conviction of a crime.

The law, signed by the governor on Aug. 16, allows a court to prohibit a person from possessing a deadly weapon when a judge finds that person presents an imminent risk of suicide or causing injury to another person.

SB 719 allows people with no mental health credentials to make assessments of others’ states of mind and it allows people with no mental health credentials (judges) to punish people they have never met...
