Freshman Sydney Nichol of Sweet Home led the No. 19-ranked Corban University women’s cross- country team to a fourth-place team finish in the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships on Saturday, Nov. 4, in La Grande.

Nichol was 10th in what is generally considered the toughest conference in NAIA cross-country.

“We had three ladies in the top-15 and we scored under 100 team points for the first time since 2006,” said Corban head coach Norm Berney.

Corban’s team total points of 98 was the second-lowest team score ever for the Warriors, who finished only behind the three CCC teams ranked in the top-10 in the NAIA.

Nichol finished in a time of 18:59.40, narrowly edging sophomore teammate Murphy who crossed the finish line in a time of 19:00.4l.

Both runners earned All-CCC plaudits and qualified for nationals individually.

In addition, Nichol finished as the fastest freshman at the CCC Championship race of all teams competing. She is a graduate of East Linn Christian Academy.

The 19th-ranked Warriors qualified for an at-large bid to nationals for the first time since 2006. For the Warriors, it will be only the second time ever that Corban has competed as a team at nationals.

The NAIA National Championships will be at Fort Vancouver in Vancouver, Wash., on Nov. 18. The women’s race is scheduled for an 11:30 a.m. start.
