Eleanor P. Barnes, 101, of Sweet Home died Nov. 7, 2017 at her home, surrounded by her loving family.

She was born Nov. 20, 1915 in Junction City to George and Caroline (Kaping) Fawver.

She was raised on a farm in the Willamette Valley, graduating from Independence High School and completing a one-year secretarial course at business college. She was married to Phillipe W. Barnes for 50-plus years before he died in 1988. She was a stay-at-home mom for all of her children’s growing-up years.

During this time, she was always involved in PTA and any other activity that supported her children and husband.

In her 50s, Mrs. Barnes earned her real estate agent’s license, and enjoyed a successful 15-plus years buying and selling homes. She and her husband liked to buy a house, remodel it, then sell. She always said she wished they had started doing this earlier in their lives.

After the death of her husband, Mrs. Barnes became very involved in the Sweet Home Senior Center, serving as president, vice president, and board member for many years. During this time, she played pinochle several times a week at the center. She continued to play pinochle with her family until her death, along with watching “Jeopardy” every night.

Mrs. Barnes is survived by three children, Phyllis Osborn-Smith and son-in-law Gerald, Dan and daughter-in-law Faye Barnes, all of Sweet Home, and Carolyn Barnes of Daytona, Fla.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband Phillipe; son Phillipe Jr.; sister Bessie; and her parents.

A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Nov. 20, at Sweet Home Funeral Chapel.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mrs. Barnes’ name to Samaritan Evergreen Hospice.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
