Huskies win Linn County wrestling title in front of hometown crowd

January 10, 2018

BRYCE PORTER puts the squeeze on West Albany's Ethan Tyler en route to a pin in a 126=pound match.

Sweet Home wrestlers dominated the Linn County Championship tournament Friday, Jan. 5, though not necessarily from the top of the podium.

The Huskies won four of the 14 weigh classes, 13 of which they had entrees in, but a strong supporting cast of placewinners boosted Sweet Home to 258 points, ahead of Lebanon (195), West Albany (174) and Scio (165).

This was the tournament's third year and Coach Steve Thorpe said he's a fan.

"It's kind of bragging rights for the county," he said. "To win this tournament means a lot. Linn County has some good wrestling. Lebanon, Albany and Scio have rich tradition."

Tournament rules permitted only one wrestler to score, though the Huskies had as many as three in a single bracket.

Thorpe said a number of wrestlers have stepped up in recent weeks, in particular, from his team.

Individual winners were junior Robbie Yunke at 132 pounds – who pinned his way through his bracket, sophomore Travis Thorpe at 138, senior Ricky Yunke at 152 and sophomore Nich James at 170.

Travis Thorpe was also named Outstanding Wrestler for the 106- through 145-pound divisions.

"Travis had a good tournament," Steve Thorpe said.

"Robbie is a dangerous wrestler when he gets you on your back – and he will get you on your back. That makes him very good.

"What a great match," he said of Ricky Yunke's 4-2 overtime win against Scio's Brandon Zeiher in a chess match. "His go-forward, hard-work, go-go-go attitude. That's why Ricky won. The other guy was tired.

"I like to see Nich winning this tournament because it's kind of a reward for all the extra he does."

Other wrestlers who, Steve Thorpe said, stood out included Treyson Smith, who finished second at 106. Thorpe said the freshman, who had been out of wrestling for three years before being persuaded to rejoin the sport this year, has made big strides.

"In that tournament he beat two people that beat him earlier in the year," Thorpe said. "The maturity and determination he's displayed – it's exposed what kind of person he is, his character. For him to come back and do that, I'm just really proud of what he's accomplished."

Sophomore Connor Ford, at 113, was second as well.

"It would have been nice to see him win that match, but I was happy to see him get to the finals," Thorpe said.

He said he was proud of his team.

"We dominated the tournament and I'm glad for that. We didn't have 14 champions. Everybody competed in a team effort to do that and some guys finished stronger than they started."

The next few days will be busy for th Huskies, who will host Elmira in a league dual meet at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 10, before traveling to Crook County Clash in Prineville Thursday. Then they will head to the Oregon Classic at the Deschutes County Expo Center Friday and Saturday, Jan. 12 and 13.
