Sweet Home School District voters asked to approve new pool levy

October 24, 2018

Voters will decide whether to continue a local option levy used to pay for swimming pool operations at Sweet Home High School in the Nov. 6 general election.

Ballots were mailed to Sweet Home voters Friday. They are due by 8 p.m. on Nov. 6 at drop-off sites, which include City Hall and the Police Department.

The current five-year levy expires June 30. For this school year the district reduced the levied amount from 32 cents per $1,000 of property value to 30 cents. The levy was passed to pay for operation of the pool, and revenues had increased beyond that level.

In August, the School Board voted to request of district voters a renewal of the levy for another five years at 30 cents per $1,000 of property value. The levy would begin on July 1 if approved.

As a local option levy for the School District, the tax does not impact city and county local option levies for law enforcement and the library. The city has not supported the creation of an aquatics district in the past because the resulting property tax compression would limit revenues in those areas.
