Wrestlers 2nd in 'tough' field at Cascade tournament

December 5, 2018

HAYDEN MCDONALD manhandles Woodburn's Isreal Paniagua at the Dick Weisbrodt duals meet at Lebanon.

Sweet Home got off to a fast start last week with a second-place finish for both the boys and girls at the at the Perry Burlison Wrestling Classic at Cascade Saturday, Dec. 1, in a 26-team field that included many of the top teams from the 6A to 2A divisions.

That came after the Huskies kicked off their season Nov. 28 at the Dick Weisbrodt duals meet in Lebanon, which was held early this year.

The Huskies went 3-0, with wins over South Albany (71-12), Woodburn (75-3) and Tigard (60-21).

"It was a good first week of wrestling for us," Coach Steve Thorpe said. "The Perry Burlison is just a tough tournament, and it's gotten tougher every year. Every bracket has at least 16-man and the 145 and 152 had nine or 10 seedable wrestlers. You know it's going to be tough."

Sweet Home's boys placed second behind now-5A Division Crook County.

"Crook County scores well in the upper weights," Thorpe said. "But we've got big kids now and that's great."

Hayden McDonald was the lone individual champion for the Huskies, winning the 170-pound class by pinning his way through the bracket.

"Hayden McDonald, that was an incredible feat for him," Thorpe said. "He's off to great start."

Jackson Royer, at 138, and Travis Thorpe, at 152, both made it to the finals, where they lost. Robert Watkins (132) and Robbie Yunke (145) both placed third.

"We've got guys who are willing to come in the back door and get third – recover after a loss," Steve Thorpe said.

In the inaugural girls-only tournament, Lexi Schilling (115), Marissa Kurtz (120) and Jessy Hart (125) all won championships. Sicily Neuschwander was second at 105; Kailey James was third at 140; Paige Chafin was sixth at 120; and newcomer Dyanna Arnold, a transfer from Central Linn, as eighth at 155.

The girls were second with 89 points behind Thurston (195) in a 14-team field.

Thorpe noted that Thurston fielded 21 wrestlers, to seven for Sweet Home.

The JV boys won their tournament, a field of 25 teams, behind individual wins from Christian Gregory (117-121), Keegan Fox (125-129), Brayden Newport (130-134), Gavin Walberg (139-148), Jesse Jamison (159-162) and Jake Fanning (201-214).

Finishing second for Sweet Home were Noah Moore (157-159), Lance Hanson (181-187) and Colby Gazeley (229-247).

Third-place medalists were Hayden Stewart (95-104), Isaac Schaffer (143-149), and Kenny Storms (210-221).

Other place-winners for the Huskies were: Alex Kisselburgh, fourth at 104-113; Codi Pearsall, fourth at 151-165; Damion Schocker, fourth at 167-176; Austin Olin, fifth at 193-202; Kyle Willhite, sixth at 144-149; Tucker Weld, sixth at 161-168; Ryan Tyndall, seventh at 119-124; Marc Kanngiesser, seventh at 220-230; Carson Perry, seventh at 240-258; and Jorel Leyba, eighth at 134-136.

Thorpe said the JV finish shows the kind of depth the Huskies have this year, with multiple, capable competitors at nearly every weight.

"We're at the front end," he said. "We have a direction now. When your JV comes in first at something like (the Burlison tournament), that kind of shows your depth. It makes me little bit excited."

The Huskies will wrestle at the Rose City Tournament in Portland this weekend, then will travel to Grants Pass Dec. 14-15.
