Husky wrestlers come away with pair of trophies from county championships

January 9, 2019

NICH JAMES avoids a takedown against three-time state champion Dax Bennett of Harrisburg in the 182-pound final.

Sweet Home's boys and girls both won team titles at the Papé Linn County Championships tournament held Friday, Jan. 4, at Harrisburg.

Coach Steve Thorpe said his wrestlers enjoyed a chance to wrestle competitors they'd faced at local middle school and mat club tournaments when they were younger.

"(Coach) Michael Cox of Lebanon started this tournament four years ago and got Papé to sponsor it, and it's turned into a very tough, very cool tournament," Thorpe said. "It's kind of bragging rights for the county, and it's nice to do that. We've won that tournament three years in a row now."

The boys scored 305 points to second-place Lebanon's 235.

The Huskies had five individual champions: Kyle Watkins at 106 pounds, Robert Watkins at 132, Jackson Royer at 138, Travis Thorpe at 152 and Hayden McDonald at 170.

Watkins was named Outstanding Wrestler for weight classes 106-145 and Thorpe for 152-285.

Thorpe pinned all three of his opponents to win his weight bracket handily. Watkins pinned his first two opponents, then beat Lebanon's Wyatt Richardson 10-8 in the title match.

"Richardson is a very good wrestler," Steve Thorpe noted.

"I like how we competed. We've got some kids who are starting to get more competition, bigger matches under their belts. Some of our second guys are competing really well. They're really getting the job done."

Bryce Porter, the No. 4 seed at 138 pounds, beat No. 1 seed Riley Suttles of Harrisburg, who was third in the state in the 3A division last year, 5-4.

Kyle Watkins, at 106, beat No. 1 seed Russell Talmadge, a returning state placer, 2-1 in the final.

"That's a good win for Kyle," Thorpe said.

He noted that Jackson Royer's and Porter's 1-2 finish at 138 was an indication of the depth the Huskies have.

"That was probably one of the toughest brackets in the tournament," he said.

At 170, McDonald pinned his first two opponents, then major-decisioned South Albany's Nicholas Bohanan 15-7 in the final.

"Hayden McDonald is continuing to be a pinner and win matches," Thorpe said.

Boe Baxter had a good run at 160, winning three matches before losing 5-1 to Lebanon's Chase Miller in the final.

Nich James pinned his first two opponents at 182 pounds, then lost 11-7 to three-time state champion Dax Bennett of Harrisburg in the final.

"Nich lost, but he probably wrestled as good as I've ever seen him wrestle," Thorpe said.

"At this point in the season, winning and losing doesn't matter. At this point, it's how you're performing and competing. That's what matters right now."

This was the first year for the girls tournament and although team scores weren't posted, the Huskies finished with three first places, from Lexi Schilling at 113, Marissa Kurtz at 125, and Kailey James at 130. All three beat teammates along the way.

"We ran into ourselves a couple of times, but that's good," Thorpe said. "The girls are clicking now."

The girls regional tournament will be Feb. 1-2 at Thurston, where wrestlers will qualify for the state tournament on Feb. 22-23.

Sweet Home will host Banks, for the first time ever, at 6 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10.
