Huskies finish regular season with easy wins over Oregon West teams

February 6, 2019

KYLE WILLHITE gets set to pin West Albany's Jonathan Aurand.

Sweet Home's boys capped off their regular season Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Oregon West Duals tournament, but the Huskies weren't really there for a trophy, Coach Steve Thorpe said.

He limited his wrestlers to three matches, which went quickly as Sweet Home beat Siuslaw 78-3, Newport 78-6 and Philomath 84-0 – only one bout of all three matches resulted in a decision.

The Huskies defeated West Albany 58-12 on Wednesday, Jan. 30, which was Senior Night for Sweet Home, in front of a near-capacity crowd; 14 wrestlers were honored.

Seniors who typically don't compete with the varsity got a chance to wrestle, with Noah Moore, Parker Lemmer, Kyle Willhite and Damion Schecker all getting wins. Marissa Kurtz and Madelyn Neuschwander, both seniors, also wrestled Bulldog opponents and both scored falls.

The varsity match was more competitive than the score may have indicated, as the Bulldogs, who now are in the 5A Division, took lost two decisions by a point and forfeited their first match.

Oregon West

Duals Tournament

Thorpe said he took advantage of the duals tournament to face some teams the Huskies hadn't seen this year, but that was about it.

"At this point, we don't have to wrestle five matches in one day," he said, noting that his team has seen Cascade, the team that likely would have given Sweet Home the biggest challenge at this point, in "multiple" tournaments, so they did not wrestle each other, though both finished unbeaten.

Seedings for the regional championships, which will determine which wrestlers qualify for state, will not be released until Friday, Thorpe said.

The eight-team Special District 2 regional meet starts at 11 a.m. Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, at Junction City. The top four finishers in each weight class will qualify for the state tournament, scheduled for Feb. 22-23 at the Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.
