Fire danger back to 'high' with looming warm temps

August 21, 2019

Oregon Department of Forestry increased designated the fire danger level as “high” Monday morning, Aug. 19, increasing from “medium.”

Temperature and moisture conditions led to the increase, said Sweet Home Unit Forester Craig Pettinger.

“I think we might get a little shot of rain Wednesday, then we’re back into the mid-80s the rest of the week and the 90s next week.”

Most forecast models show the increasing temperatures, Pettinger said, but one predicts another weather system moving through the area instead.

Under the high fire danger designation, activities like mowing are restricted between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Campfires are not permitted on ODF-protected lands, rural areas around the city, except in designated locations in campgrounds.

Industrial Fire Precaution is at Level II.

In the past week, Springfield, the southern end of the ODF South Cascades District, had a fire caused by a mower. Sweet Home Unit had a couple of burn complaints.
