Events schedule: Plenty to do, locally, for Veterans Day

Free Veterans Dinner Monday, Nov. 11

5:30 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.

Sweet Home Elks will be honoring veterans with a free dinner and evening of fun. Friends and family $7.00 includes coffee and dessert. Free haircuts provided by Beauty 101, chair massages available compliments of Tiffany Akers. Veterans will be entered into drawings. Sweet Home Elks Lodge 440 Osage Street.

Veterans Reception Wednesday, Nov. 6

2 p.m. - 3 p.m.

at Lebanon Senior Center, 80 Tangent St .: This event will honor veterans and members of the armed forces. Pearl Harbor memories shared. Presentation by Michael Aaron, Commander VFW Post 584 and President LINK UP VETS. Colors will be posted and retired by LHS JROTC Color Guard. There will be a patriotic lap quilt giveaway. at West Albany High School: Cost is $8 per person, $4 for  veterans/active military in uniform/children under the age of 12.

Veteran of the Year Banquet

Sunday, Nov. 10

7 p.m.

at Linn Co. Fair and Expo Center, 3700 Knox Butte Road, SE, Albany: An evening to honor the Veteran of the Year, distinguished veterans and where friends reconnect. Those who have served both their country and their communities will be honored.


Doors open at 6 p.m. with dinner and the evening’s program beginning at 7 p.m.

Veterans Day

Memorial Service

Saturday, Nov. 9

8:30 a.m.

at Linn County Veterans Memorial, Timber Linn Park, Albany: POW/MIA and Gold Star wreaths will be placed in remembrance, “Oregon’s Own” 234th Army Band will perform and guest speakers will honor all. Oregon Army National Guard Bravo Battery 2-218 FA will perform a 21-gun salute, and Echo Taps will be played.

Albany Veterans Day Parade

11 a.m.

– 68th Downtown Albany: 66th annual Albany Veterans Day Parade is the largest Veterans Day parade west of the Mississippi, with 200-plus entries. Parade route runs north on Lyons Street, west on 2nd Avenue and south on Ferry. Crowds are thick, so it’s a good idea to get there early to stake out a spot.

(following the end of the parade) on the steps of the Linn County Courthouse. (4th Avenue SW and Broadalbin Street): Awards are handed out to winners, selected by judges on the parade route, in three categories: Bands, Marching units and Color Guards.

Free Spaghetti Lunch

American Legion Post 10, 1215 Pacific Blvd., Albany: The American Legion will offer a spaghetti lunch to all veterans and parade participants.

Willamette Master Chorus Veterans

3 p.m.

Willamette Master Chorus presents “Made in America” which will be held on the Willamette University Campus 900 State St. in Salem in the Roger Music Center. Concert

Saturday, Nov. 9

3:00 to 4 p.m.

A tribute concert to honored veterans. The concert includes popular music from the Civil War era, a piece from Saving Private Ryan – Hymn for the Fallen – which will also feature the Lebanon HS Choir, several rousing marches and many more special pieces selected to make this a very enjoyable concert. The Lebanon American Legion will present the colors, and they will recognize the Armed Services with the Armed Forces Salute. National March – The Stars and Stripes Forever by John Philip Sousa will also be performed.
