Girls fall to top-ranked Philomath, Stayton on road in basketball

January 22, 2020

The Huskies ran into two of the toughest teams in the state last week in girls basketball, falling to top-ranked Philomath 64-20 Jan. 14 and eighth-ranked Stayton 76-33 Friday on the road.

In both games, Sweet Home’s opponents had much more experience playing together, said Coach Michelle Knight.

Philomath quickly dominated the game, leading 26-3 after a quarter and 40-9 at halftime. The Warriors extended their lead to 54-15 in the third quarter.

“They are tall,” Knight said. “They have been playing together since they were really young. They are a really good, fundamental team.”

While the score doesn’t show it, “I thought we did some pretty good things,” Knight said. “We were able to get into our offense a little more.”

Brooke Burke led the Huskies with eight points, while Sage Kramer led Philomath with 20.

At Stayton, “ironically, we worked really hard on defense all week, but we struggled defensively,” Knight said. “Offensively, I thought we did some things just fine.”

The Eagles started pressing the Huskies, Knight said. The Huskies do better when pressed, so Stayton broke off its press quickly.

Stayton led 27-13 in the first quarter, 42-26 at halftime and 63-29 in the third quarter.

Burke led scoring for the Huskies with 15 points, and K.J. Nyquist and Karlee Tyler led Stayton with 18 points each.

The Huskies remain on the road, visiting Cascade at 5:30 p.m. Friday and Sisters at 5:30 p.m. on Jan. 28.

Cascade is 1-1 in league and 6-8 overall. The Cougars are 19th in OSAA rankings. Sisters is 0-2 in league, 2-12 overall and ranked 33rd. Sweet Home is 0-3 in league, 6-8 overall and ranked 22nd.

“I honestly think we can play with anyone,” Knight said. “We just need to clean up our game and do some things better fundamentally.”
