Depleted girls struggle against Cascade

ADAIRA BURGER forces her way through the paint.

Suffering from depth problems, Sweet Home lost 59-27 at Cascade Friday evening in girls basketball.

Cascade took a big early lead, 17-6 after the first quarter, but the Huskies rallied back and trailed just 27-21 at halftime. Cascade returned in the second half to dominate the game, leading 42-25 heading into the fourth quarter.

"I have four girls playing with injuries and not enough players to sub in at the end," said Coach Michelle Knight. By the fourth quarter, the Huskies were out of steam.

They shot just 15 percent during the game and turned the ball over 25 times, but Knight said they had some defensive improvement, and they successfully targeted and held off two Cascade shooters, Abby Jeppsen and Abbigail Cordero, to 12 points combined, but others stepped in to put points on the board.

Camryn Boyles and Kenna Coleman scored 19 and 16 respectively to lead the Cougars.

On the Huskies' side, "Adaira (Burger) did a great job," Knight said. "She shut (Cordero) down completely."

Burger had 12 rebounds and scored six. Brooke Burke led the Huskies with 10 points, while Katie Miller and Becky Belcher each collected seven rebounds.

"We always want to win," Knight said, but she wasn't unhappy with the game. In the locker room after the game, the Huskies were "not discouraged. They were determined to keep fighting. They have a fire. They don't ever give up. They don't ever stop trying."

Sweet Home, 0-4 in league and 6-9 overall, is scheduled to visit Sisters, 0-4 in league and 2-14 overall, Tuesday. They host Newport, 1-2 in league and 5-10 overall, Friday at 5:30 p.m. and visit Woodburn, 2-2 in league and 5-9 overall, at 7 p.m. on Feb. 4.
