Feb. 6, 1931 - March 21, 2020
Marian E. Nelson, 89, of Sweet Home, died peacefully on March 21, 2020 at Willamette Springs Memory Care Home in Corvallis.
She was born on February 6, 1931 in Mill City, the daughter of Russell and Ellen (Dehaven) King.
She married her high school sweetheart, Sonny Nelson, on Aug. 20, 1950.
Mrs. Nelson worked as a secretary and payroll clerk for Detroit Dam while it was being built. The Nelsons lived in Mill City, then Tillamook for a short while, and eventually settled in Sweet Home. She worked as a secretary for a local mill until its closure, then became the business secretary for Sweet Home School District, where she stayed until her retirement.
Mrs. Nelson loved to quilt and made sure that all of her children and grandchildren had samples of her beautiful work. She was also an avid golfer and traveler. The Nelsons traveled all over the world in their retirement years and would spend each winter in Palm Springs soaking up the sun.
Mrs. Nelson is survived by her daughters, Shirley and son-in-law Jim Tack, and Nancy and son-in-law Joe Brocard, both of Sweet Home, and Linda and son-in-law Ken Postma of Cascade, Idaho; six grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Sonny; and both parents.
A private graveside service took place at Gilliland Cemetery. Donations can be made to the Safe Haven Humane Society in Albany.
Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
