East-end sidewalk project costs keep rising, thanks to delays

THE CITY has planned for years to build a sidewalk that includes this stretch of Highway 20, but has faced repeated setbacks.

A sidewalk project along Highway 20 in Sweet Home, which has been in the works for five years, has ballooned to over $3 million in total costs, City Council members learned Tuesday, July 28.

The project, initially proposed to the Oregon Department of Transportation in 2015, was intended to create a sidewalk on both sides of Main Street from 55th to Foster Reservoir. But it now only includes a sidewalk on the north side of the street and two pedestrian crossings. It also has been limited to the area from 55th Avenue to 60th Avenue on the north side, whereas the original plans...
