Edgar Benjamin Volkers, 82, of Sweet Home, died Aug. 4, 2020.
He was born June 9, 1938 in Terre Haute, Ind., to Ernie Rea and Katherine Margaret (Ellingworth) Volkers.
He served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1959 as a military police officer. After an honorable discharge from the Army, Mr. Volkers met Patricia D. Ebert from DeRidder, La. They married June 27, 1959 in Terre Haute and then moved to Sweet Home.
Mr. Volkers worked for a variety of employers, including planting trees for the U.S. Forest Service, as a reserve officer for the Sweet Home Police Department, and, until his retirement, 22 years for Willamette Industries. He also owned and operated Ed's CB sales, Video Trak, and the Frontier Lounge and Restaurant.
Mr. Volkers was a member of St. Helen Catholic Church, Sweet Home Elks Lodge, and the Sweet Home VFW.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, working on electronics, going to casinos, and working on small engines and auto engines.
Mr. Volkers is survived by his wife of 61 years, Patricia Volkers of Sweet Home; children Debe Carter of Astoria, Ed Jr. of Gig Harbor, Wash., Pam Lewis of Lebanon, and Ernie of Sweet Home; brothers John Volkers of Boise, Idaho, and Phil and Marv Volkers of Sweet Home; sisters Ernestine Kelley of Orlando, Fla., Marianna Frye of San Antonio, Texas, and Ruth Hoephner of Moline, Ill .; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Lawrence, Jerome, Walter, and Andrew.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 22, at St. Helen Catholic Church in Sweet Home, with a potluck gathering for family and friends at the Sweet Home VFW Park.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in Mr. Volkers' name to a charity of choice.
