Wear and tear leaves Sankey Park bandstand facing demolition

THE SANKEY PARK bandstand has suffered a variety of damage, including from a tree falling on the structure and tree roots underneath.

The Sankey Park bandstand is on its last legs, and will have to be taken down and replaced, according to a report presented to the City Council at its Aug. 11 meeting.

The structure was built in the late 1930s or early 1940s as a New Deal project.

A tree fell on the structure in 2018, which prompted the city to take a look at the structure of the bandstand. Stability Engineering, Inc. performed a structural review of the bandstand in 2019 and found serious problems with dry rot, a cracked foundation, and shifted braces.
