Nov. 18, 1935 – Nov. 9, 2020
Gerald “Jerry” Lee Matthews, 84, of Sweet Home died Nov. 9, 2020.
He was born Nov. 18, 1935 in Big Springs, Texas, to Edmond and Lela Maywood (Thompson) Matthews. He resided in Sweet Home for the past 50 years.
Mr. Matthews loved many things. Dean Martin and Louis Armstrong will forever remind his family of his quiet passion for music. He loved gardening, fishing, long outdoor walks, photography and, especially, trips to the ocean. No baseball game was “too far,” no graduation “too long.” He showed up, he supported, he loved.
Mr. Matthews cherished a quiet afternoon catching up with John Grisham – he never could turn down a good book suggestion. In the evenings he would sit side by side with his wife Barbara, answering “Jeopardy” questions and solving “Wheel of Fortune” puzzles.
Mr. Matthews served in the Air Force and the Army National Guard. Saint Helen Catholic Church was his second home and his unwavering faith led him through life. His life was devoted to God, his wife, and his country.
He leaves behind a loving family and some lifelong friends.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara Ann Matthews; three children, Teri, Lori and son-in-law Brad, and Jerry and daughter-in-law Chrissy; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and three great-great- grandkids.
A memorial service took place Nov. 13. Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements. http://www.sweethomefuneral.com
