I really enjoyed your article on Myrtle Gates (July 7). She was quite the lady, carrying herself with beautiful posture. My husband, Dale Montgomery, and I visited her in Virginia when she was almost 100. She gave us a tour of her retirement home where she directed the choir, made layettes for single mothers and did quilling, an intricate paper curling art.

One of our favorite memories is her comment on the Methodist Church choir, which she had directed for many years. She said “You looked beautiful.”

In other words, we did not sound all that good!
