Woman sentenced to state hospital following attack

April 20, 2022

Cassandra Carry Hotchkiss, 41, was found guilty except for insanity by reason of schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type on April 14 for a Sept. 11, 2021 assault and robbery against Louis Anthony Carreiro.

According to court documents, Carreiro was sleeping in his tent at the old Sweet Home City Hall parking lot when he woke up at about 3 a..m. to find Hotchkiss yelling and beating him in the head with a wooden object. During the assault, Hotchkiss took his cell phone, valued at $69. Carreiro suffered lacerations to the head. Sergeant Ryan Cummings reported that, at the time of her arrest, Hotchkiss told him she was sent there to “get rid of terrorists.”

An evaluation by Dr. Stephen Brennan reported the opinion that Hotchkiss meets the criteria for a “Guilty Except Insanity” defense. He opined she has schizoaffective disorder, bipolar type that requires medical care, it being not appropriate for her release into the community.

Hotchkiss was sentenced to custody of the state mental hospital for up to 15 years under the care, custody and treatment of the Psychiatric Security Review Board.
