Helen Jean Stewart, 90, of Sweet Home, died Sept. 12, 2022.

She was born Sept. 7, 1932 in Aumsville to Frank Givens and Elma Ella (Tyler) Stewart, the oldest of four children.

Miss Stewart graduated from Sweet Home Union High School in 1949 and went on to receive her teaching degree from Oregon College of Education in Monmouth (now Western Oregon University) in 1953.

After two years of teaching in Oregon, she started her Alaska teaching career, first in Bethel, then in Dillingham, and finally in Togiak. After the death of her father in 1983, she moved back to Sweet Home and remained until recent years, when she moved to Springfield.

She enjoyed singing hymns. Her favorite scripture was Colossians 3: 15-16 and used this to exemplify her life: "Let the Message about Christ in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom He gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts."

Miss Stewart is survived by her brother, Edward Stewart, and sister-in-law, Shirley, of Palmer, Alaska; sisters Phyllis Smith, of Springfield, and Diane Culbertson, of Sweet Home; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Frank and Elma Stewart.

A celebration of life will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 24, at Waterloo Chapel, 39480 Gross St., Waterloo.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the East Linn Christian Academy or to Wycliffe Bible Translators.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
