John Dean “JD” Kast, 69, of Sweet Home, died March 26, 2023, at home in Sweet Home with his family at his side.

He was born June 11, 1953, in Woodland, Calif., to Elmer A. and Loretta M. (Zuniga) Kast, the oldest of four children.

Mr. Kast was an avid horseman, reader and outdoorsman all his life. He lived with his brother Luke in Sweet Home for many years, and led an active life – hunting, fishing, reading, watching movies, road tripping, camping, coin collecting and visiting with friends and family.

He loved his dogs and spoiled them with cuddles, conversation and an endless supply of treats.

Mr. Kast worked a variety of jobs in his life, starting in the orchards, fruit sheds and hay fields of California with siblings and cousins at a young age.  He went on to work in a saw mill, as a firefighter and fire lookout, spent time working on a dude ranch, drove truck, scrapped iron, worked construction and various agriculture jobs.

Mr. Kast learned from his mother at a young age his need for a Savior and never lost his faith in Jesus Christ to forgive his sins.  He looked  forward to going “home” to heaven, especially in the last few months.

Many are left to miss and remember him including brothers, Elmer “Luke” Kast of Sweet Home;  Aaron “Dewey” Kast of Lexington, Neb.; sister Karen and brother-in-law Samuel Lange of Lexington, Neb.; many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Michelle Kast; and parents Elmer and Loretta.

A memorial gathering will be held at a later date.

Sweet Home Funeral Chapel is handling the arrangements.
