Terrence J. Mumey, 77, of Surprise, Ariz., a former Sweet Home resident, passed away April 15, 2023, with his wife and niece at his side.

Terry was born Jan. 8, 1946, in Estacada and raised in Holley. He graduated from Sweet Home High School in 1964. While in school he served as senior class president and worked for Robert’s Men’s Store, a precursor to his chosen vocation.

He met his future wife, Marilyn Ripley, in eighth grade at dance lessons at the local Elks Club. They reconnected in high school and married in 1966.

Terry joined the Army National Guard, serving six years. He also studied at Oregon State and Pepperdine universities.

Terry and Marilyn, together, pursued careers in retail management, which allowed for many adventures and travel.

They left Oregon to become retail managers of ski and golf shops in resorts at North Lake Tahoe and Pebble Beach in California, Vail Resorts in Colorado, and Big Sky, Montana. Later, they opened independent stores in Ennis, Mont., and Sisters.

While in Big Sky, Terry led a committee to fund an interdenominational church for Catholic, Jewish and Protestant residents and tourists to the area.

He retired with Marilyn to Surprise, and to Star Valley, Wyo., where he honed his skills as an avid golfer and his passion as a fly fisherman. A gentle soul, with a quick wit, he was an intelligent man of integrity, humility, grace and a generous spirit. He held a deep faith in God.

Although he and Marilyn had no children, Terry was beloved by all his nieces and nephews, and he lovingly raised three golden retrievers, who each had the best of lives.

Terry is survived by his wife, Marilyn Ripley Mumey; and brothers Jerry, Dale and Dennis Mumey.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister.

He will be missed by all who knew him.

Memorial services are planned for later.
