June 1973: Reading was big in Mrs. Dwight Templeton's first-grade class at Pleasant Valley School. Each student who read 50 or more books got a crown and those who read 100 or more got a wand. Tony Babcock was the biggest reader, with 175, followed by Jane Ingram (149), Elizabeth Bradley with 120 and Linda Andrews with 119.

The Sweet Home High-Q team took the state champion title after defeating Beaverton High School 175-145.

As the youngest team from the smallest school in Oregon, the Sweet Home team is composed of four juniors (Erik Duncan, Richard Black, Jim Cook and alternate Steve Stenburg) and one sophomore (Tom Palkki). Referred to as the giant killers, the students jokingly give credit of their winning to the fact they all have rather long hair.

The team won nine consecutive games, and if they win their first set next fall, they will have set a new record. Sweet Home was also in the fina...
