People pick out clothes at a free back to school clothing event at the Sweet Home High School cafeteria on Aug. 19.
The Sweet Home School District Clothing Closet Free Back to School Clothing Event at the high school cafeteria drew 240 kids last Saturday, Aug. 19. Gently used clothing and shoes were available, as well as socks, underwear, and toiletry bags. All of the clothing was donated through members of the community.
"We had a line waiting to get in," organizer Kristi Walker, health services project director for the school district, said. "There were probably 40 kids waiting to get in before we opened up."
Walker said that some women who had rough times growing up started the program through their church years ago. "Then they were ready to give it up and I came on board and took it over," she said. She started in 2017.
Adelynn Lounsbury brought nine kids on Saturday to the event, a group including her own children ranging from a third grader to a high school senior as well as some of her children's friends.
"We've come in previous years, and it's always been very, very helpful," Lounsbury said. "Especially because it gets you through that back to school hiccup."
