1973 Ash and cinder cover Lester Wild as he drives his "Cat" through smoldering garbage as workers spray thousands of gallons of water on the debris in an attempt to extinguish the Holley Dump fire by Oct. 5 in compliance with Dept. of Environmental Quality's demands.

Santiam Four Wheel Drive Assn. used Lost Prairie in the Willamette National Forest as its base camp for a wide area cleanup over the weekend. In partnership with the Forest Service and other four-wheel clubs between Salem and Eugene, as many as 27 "rigs" and 90 people helped cover 20 miles to pick up trash that measured 8 feet high and 15 feet in diameter, plus a truck cab and derelict station wagon.

The Sweet Home telephone exchange had a 7.5% increase in telephone stations this past year, an increase of 337 exchanges. Increases in exchanges in Sweet Home, Lebanon and Browns...
